BlueScope Steel welcomed the announcement from the US International Trade Commission to remove duties on imports of coated steel from Australia.
"We welcome this exciting market development both as a steel maker and as an Australian manufacturer," said Kirby Adams, Managing Director and CEO. "It is a very positive step. The removal of these duties unlocks the world's largest coated steel market, paving the way to a freer and fairer trading environment in the US."
BlueScope Steel is one of the world's largest manufacturers of coated
steel product, producing approximately 1.6 million tonnes by its Australia
Coated and Building Products business. The Company has significant
operations in the US market through its downstream business Butler
Buildings, the world's premier brand in pre-engineered steel building
systems, and its joint venture in North Star BlueScope Steel.
The removal of duties on steel imports will provide BlueScope Steel with dual benefits:
- Butler Buildings will have access to another source of supply for coated steel
- It will open the world's largest coated steel market to BlueScope Steel.
"While it is too early to say exactly what effect the tariff removal will have on our business overall, we are well placed through our geographic footprint, our product diversification and position in the premium end of the coated steel market," said Mr Adams.
