The Panama Canal is approximately 80 kilometers long between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This waterway was cut through one of narrowest saddles of the isthmus that joins North and South America.
The Canal uses a system of locks -compartments with entrance and exit gates. The locks function as water lifts: they raise ships from sea level (the Pacific or the Atlantic) to the level of Gatun Lake (26 meters above sea level); ships then sail the channel through the Continental Divide.

CHICAGO - Liquidity and credit quality are again at the forefront as the critical determinants of the U.S. airline industry's economic viability.
The sheer magnitude of increasing energy prices and resulting weak cash flows make further industry consolidation unworkable. Indeed, the mechanism for industry capacity rationalization is now financial distress and carrier liquidation as opposed to merger and acquisition activity. Over the second half of 2008, more forced take-out of domestic capacity is likely as ongoing fuel cost pressures drain liquidity to distressed levels at all but the most cash-rich carriers.
According to Fitch Ratings expectations are that all of the U.S. legacy carriers will experience rapid erosion of cash levels in the post-Labor Day period. This erosion could threaten their survival if adverse fuel trends continue, and multiple bankruptcies and liquidations are increasingly likely looking ahead to 2009. |

WASHINGTON - Despite progress being made in implementing the Certified Cargo Screener Program (CCSP), significant challenges remain in future success due to lack of funding, according to executive director of the Airforwarders Association (AfA) in testimony before the House Committee on Homeland Security today. Brandon Fried testified that due to the extremely high cost of purchasing machinery without federal assistance, many forwarders may choose not to participate in what is TSA’s primary tool to achieve 100 percent screening of cargo by the August 2010 deadline established by Congress.
“We are extremely concerned about the lack of government funding for the 100 percent screening mandate,” said Fried. “Congress has stated that homeland security is a federal government priority –certainly, aviation security is included on that list of responsibilities. If it is a government mandate, for a government responsibility to secure our planes, why then is it not the government’s money that provides for that security?” |
