The new Yutong Green Bus under construction in China. The new environmentally friendly aluminum intensive bus weighs one and a half tons less than a standard bus, thus dramatically reducing emissions.

BEIJING - Alcoa (NYSE:AA), the world’s leading aluminum company, and Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Company (Yutong), China’s largest bus manufacturer and the number two producer in the world, today introduced two new environmentally-friendly bus prototypes that will be displayed and road tested during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing next month.
Technology Can Reduce Fuel Tank Explosion Risk, Improve Airline Passenger Safety

Phyre Technologies’ Superior Solution Addresses New FAA Fuel Tank Safety Requirements

EL CAJON, Calif. - Phyre Technologies applauds the new fuel tank safety rule announced today by the Department of Transportation aimed at preventing future fuel tank explosions on commercial airlines like the 1996 TWA flight 800 disaster. The company has pioneered an effective “green” on-board system that removes oxygen and vapor in fuel tanks to avoid the possible ignition of combustible gasses.

Phyre Technologies is the global pioneer and leader in closed-loop fuel tank safety technology for commercial and military aircraft. Its “Green” On-Board Inert Gas Generation System (GOBIGGS™) eliminates the probability of fuel tank ignition or explosion by dramatically reducing the oxygen and fuel vapor in the fuel tank. In addition, unlike existing technologies, the environmentally friendly system does not ventilate fuel vapor into the atmosphere.

China Dismisses Critics of UN's Decision on African Ivory Trade License

China has dismissed critics of the United Nations decision to allow Beijing to buy ivory from Africa. Some wildlife protection organizations say the license to legally trade will only encourage smuggling and elephant poaching.

China's Foreign Ministry has disputed concerns that China cannot adequately police its trade in ivory. A United Nations' committee in charge of regulating the trade voted Tuesday to grant China the right to bid in an auction, along with Japan, for African ivory.

The panel's majority agreed that China had improved its ivory trade monitoring and could participate in a one-off sale of 108 tons of African ivory.

Ivory trading was banned in 1989 to discourage poaching of a shrinking population of elephants. Controlled trade in ivory was approved in 2002 provided that the elephants died of natural causes or were killed as part of population management.

New Rule Reduces Risk of Fuel Tank Flammability on Passenger Jets

ASHBURN, Va.– Within two years, all new aircraft must include technology designed to significantly reduce the risk of center fuel tank fires as part of a final rule announced today by U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters. In addition, passenger aircraft built after 1991 must be retrofitted with technology designed to keep center fuel tanks from catching fire, she said.

“We want to do everything possible to make sure safety examiners won’t have to investigate another plane shattered by an exploding tank,” said Secretary Peters. “We can’t change the past, but we can make the future safer for thousands of air travelers, and this rule does just that.”

The Secretary, who spoke on the day before the anniversary of the crash of TWA Flight 800, said the new rule was needed to help avoid a similar tragic incident. She said the rule requires aircraft to have technology to neutralize...

Panama Canal General Information

The Panama Canal is approximately 80 kilometers long between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This waterway was cut through one of narrowest saddles of the isthmus that joins North and South America.

The Canal uses a system of locks -compartments with entrance and exit gates. The locks function as water lifts: they raise ships from sea level (the Pacific or the Atlantic) to the level of Gatun Lake (26 meters above sea level); ships then sail the channel through the Continental Divide.
