Gulfport, Mississippi - Gulf Coast International Cargo (GCIC) expects to move into a new $40-million facility at the airport by the end of August with a heavy emphasis on exporting goods to South America.

The cargo facility includes 20,000 square feet of chiller space, 20,000 square feet of cargo sorting and distribution space, and 6,000 square feet of office space. GCIC will lease several planes to fly back and forth between Gulfport and South America, but to make the leases profitable the company needed a commitment to export goods.

Mike Alise, president of Gulf Coast International Cargo, said his company plans to staff the new facility at the airport with about 15 employees. If exports grow, he hopes to hire up to 60 workers.

"That way the planes aren't flying back empty," Alise said. "Instead, they're always full."

GCIC executives have been in talks with the Consumer Electronics Agency to export all things electronic. "This is a monumental step for the cargo industry," Alise said.

Alise said that 50 percent of the food consumed in Panama comes from the U.S. and he hopes to eventually add food and produce to his list of exports.
